On the Prairies, we can see where the persistence of our members working with others has made a real difference:

Picture
  • We brought stakeholders concerned to save the rail track between Regina and Davidson (part-way to Saskatoon) together in a Symposium. This led eventually to the new Last Mountain Railway.

  • In Regina working through the very active Regina Citizens' Public Transit Coalition, we gathered 7,7000 signatures and received some extended Sunday and holiday service, as well as media  and city council  attention to transit issues.

  • Our Director of Disabilities Issues works with a wide network of other organizations, in Canada and abroad, on ways to make all transportation inclusive.

We are working towards:

Picture
  • Improved service, affordability, accessibility and use of urban public transit - "an essential service".
  • Safety and convenience for pedestrian and cycling transportation.
  • Enhancement of rural bus transportation.
  • Restoration of VIA passenger rail across the southern prairies.
  • Upgrading of current VIA rail service.
  • Practical access for people with disabilities in every mode of transportation.
  • Alternatives to the private car.
  • More freight by rail instead of by road.
  • User participation in transportation planning at municipal, provincial and federal levels.
  • More respectful and health-giving use of the land.

The Issues:

  • Environmental Concerns
    • Rail is the most environmentally benign mode for inter-city travel.  Bus is next.
    • Transportation alternatives to cars and short-haul airplanes are essential to combating the climate change crisis.
  • Energy
    • Most transportation depends on fast-diminishing supplies of fossil fuels, and accounts for over half of Canada's petroleum use (factoring in the manufacture of vehicles).
    • Walking, cycling, then rail and bus are the most efficient modes.
    • The car and short-haul aviation are least energy-efficient.
  • Economy
    • Our taxes pay for roads.
    • Ever-increasing car and truck traffic and sprawling development raise the cost of road maintenance, policing, service delivery, and health care.
  • Social Equity
    • Transportation choice should be affordable and accessible for everyone as an essential service.
  • Land Usage
    • Planning to promote public transit, cycling and walk ability, will create livable, healthy communities by limiting sprawl.
